An Oak Tree in the Garden

A monk asked Joshu why Bodhidharma came to China. Joshu answered, "The oak tree in the garden."

Bodhidharma brought Zen to China in the sixth century. Thus the question means, "What is Zen?" Joshu gives a beautiful answer: "The oak tree in the garden."
